MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY MODSIM MODELING & SIMULATION RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CENTER [Invıted Competition 1st Prize]
METU Modsim is an office and a laboratory building situated in a 5.200sqm of land. The 4.200-sqm.-building displays a unique identity by means of its spatial configuration and the use of materials. Being at the midst of a poplar forest, it reflects all greens of the surrounding through its facade. It greets the context by means of its height. The design was a candidate of Mies Awards on 2011.
The rectangular volume has a distinctive means of plan development. The plan was configured out of strips of architectural elements. The strips are intertwined and surround the inner atrium. The nested strip plan resemble the traditional Turkish carpets that are nested in colorful layers. The elements, which help in the development of strips with diverse widths, are:
1.Steel sun shader
2.Facade with five different colored glass
3.Working spaces
4.Service elements, such as, toilets, storage and shafts.
5.Corridor
6.Atrium void with mirror coated base
7.The ornage colored stair in the middle
DESIGNOGRAPHY
A double function, simulation and research, was required in the program. The buildilng was designed in such a way that these two different programs do not mix in terms of circulation. However, their future interrelation was required in the brief. In order to gain this flexibility in the programmatic development, the built volume was integrated with a grid in the third dimension.
3D Matrix
A three dimensional matrix is developed by integrated the rectangular volume to a 7m x 7m. main grid and a 1.4m. x 1.4m. secondary grid. All the spaces and elements, such as walls, windows, ceilings, shafts, lighting elements, ducts, balustrades, canopies, floors, doors are designed by following the dimensions provided by the grids.
The building has a brutalist style as the elements are designed with raw materials. They are easily demountable, remountable and open to re-structuring. Every future changes in the design can be made through that way.
Grid System
AXONOMETRIC PLANS
This building is the outcome of a three dimensional reference system created out of a matrix, its constitutional elements and relations. A system out of strips and grids results in a design that was freed from the creative impulse of the architect and that provided a collaborative work with the diverse actors that have a role in the project phase.
