
LONGOSPHERE SERENITY LOUNGE
Located within the unique ecosystem of the İğneada Floodplain Forests on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, Longosphere was conceived as a nature-based accommodation model that places the preservation of its ecological context at the heart of its design. İğneada is a region characterized by the coexistence of rare floodplain and deciduous forests, coastal dunes, freshwater and saltwater lakes, and rich flora and fauna, creating a distinctive ecological setting within the European context. The project was developed on a 17-hectare former afforestation area along the main road leading to the center of İğneada, approximately one kilometer from the sea. Oak and pine trees covered with ivy and moss, forest-fruit-bearing shrubs, briars and a wide variety of fungi form part of the site’s existing ecosystem.
The project was developed around the idea of carefully inserting architecture into the existing ecological system. Water, dense vegetation, natural topography and biodiversity were considered not simply as environmental conditions, but as primary design inputs. The masterplan brings together accommodation, recreation and social functions through a strategy that minimizes intervention to the existing landscape. The position of the buildings was determined through a detailed survey of the existing trees, allowing the existing vegetation to define the placement of the built environment. In this way, the landscape was considered one of the project’s primary spatial components.
In this sense, Serenity Lounge is not an independent spa added to the Longosphere complex, but a continuation and reinterpretation of the design principles established from the beginning of the project. Bringing together site, structure, material and programme as parts of a single ecological and spatial system, the building roots the wellness experience within its landscape.

The characteristic timber rib structure of Longosphere takes its conceptual and tectonic reference from the wooden framework of traditional Black Sea boats. The rib system operates beyond a mere architectural expression shaping the building envelope; it acts as a primary architectural and structural element through which geometry, scale, construction and identity come together. The system consists of two layers of timber ribs working in opposing directions. A secondary rib network positioned above the closely spaced primary ribs forms a load-bearing framework for the primary system, providing structural stability while maintaining the visual continuity of the ribbed envelope. This tectonic configuration transforms the structure itself into part of the architectural expression, blurring the distinction between the load-bearing system and the building envelope. The adaptability of the same structural principle to different scales and geometries allows all buildings, from the smallest service units to larger gathering spaces, to be conceived as variations of a common architectural system. Serenity Lounge continues Longosphere’s timber rib structure while adapting the system to the geometry of its circular plan, giving it a new spatial expression.

The structural strategy is directly connected to the project’s ecological objectives. All buildings are slightly elevated above the natural ground on timber supports, reducing their impact on existing vegetation and soil formation. The use of natural, sustainable and recyclable materials reinforces this low-impact approach, while the modular system allows the construction process to be rationalized without compromising the diversity of architectural forms. At Longosphere, sustainability is a fundamental design principle that determines how buildings are positioned, constructed, materialized and experienced. The structural system therefore operates simultaneously as a means of reducing ecological impact, a construction method and an architectural language defining the character of the complex.

The newest addition to Longosphere, Serenity Lounge, reinterprets this architectural language through a different programme and a new primary element: water. While the accommodation and recreation buildings establish their relationship with nature through materiality, structure and careful positioning within the site, Serenity Lounge introduces the fluidity of water into this relationship. Water is considered not merely as a functional element within the spa, but as a spatial tool. The plan of Serenity Lounge is organized through concentric spatial layers developing around a circular central deck designed for sunbathing and relaxation. A ribbon of water surrounds the deck, forming the first permeable threshold between the open center and the enclosed programme. Within this configuration, water becomes a fluid element that activates the spatial organization of the building rather than a static landscape feature. Emerging from the winter garden within the building, water flows outward, curves around the central deck and maintains its continuity through the concentric layers of the plan. The use of transparency and controlled natural light further dissolves the distinction between interior and exterior, allowing the surrounding forest to become an active part of the spatial experience.

The programme is organized to create a holistic wellness experience. Indoor and outdoor heated pools, a Turkish bath, sauna, steam room, massage rooms and a vitamin bar are arranged in visual and spatial continuity with the water and landscape. Controlled natural light, framed views toward the forest and transparent circulation spaces reduce the distance between the user and the surrounding environment, extending the wellness experience beyond an enclosed interior and into nature.
